Earlier today a report appeared that Apple and Microsoft talk about replacing Google as default search engine on the 
If true than I think Apple is really preparing an iPhone that will be sans Google services by default.
Today Google Search and Google Maps are very prominently featured on the iPhone.
Today the iPhone makes it very easy to use Google services, but Apple could be soon in a position to cover all important services Google currently offers for them.
Last October a report appeared that Apple bought PlaceBase, which built an alternative to Google Maps.
With Mobile Me Apple is already offering personal communication service. Apple needs to just offer it for free to match Google's offerings.
And of course if the Bing deal goes through, Google Search is out by default. Long term Apple is rumored to offer their own search.
On the business side, Apple just recently bought a mobile advertising company called Quattro Wireless.
As mobile advertising is seen to explode over the next years, it is strategically important to own all mobile services ads can be placed on to be on top of the food chain.
Google is doing the same thing with Android and they are ahead in providing all services. Apple could though catch up with the iPhone 2010 and the iPhone 4.0 OS.
